The East Rockaway Board of Education unanimously approved a $34.3 million proposed budget at their April 12 meeting. The plan, which calls for a 2.94 percent increase and 3.77 percent tax levy, which must still be approved by voters on May 17, includes keeping all current clubs, sports teams, the district’s enterprise program, and new programs for students with autism and disabilities, among other items. “At a certain point, it’s really up to the community what they want for their schools,” said Schools Superintendent Dr. Roseanne Melucci.

Bracing for what school officials call “drastic cuts,” the Lynbrook and East Rockaway school districts, along with others in New York state, could face harsh financial realities following the Feb. 1 release of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s first proposed state budget, which calls for a 7.3 percent reduction in education aid next year. The state legislature will amend teh executive’s proposal and has an April 1 deadline to pass a complete state budget of which state aid is a part.

Recently, Nassau County superintendents of schools received literature from County Executive Ed Mangano regarding his 2011 “No Property Tax Increase Budget.” As part of this proposed budget, county legislators voted, strictly along party lines, to shift the financial expense of paying county assessment errors from Nassau County to the local school districts. We certainly agree that the assessment system is broken; however, shifting the responsibility to the school districts will not help fix it.
