The Bank of America on Main Street in East Rockaway was robbed late Tuesday afternoon for the second time in three months. Police detectives investigated at the scene as a police helicopter flew overhead. Fourth precinct police described the man as being white, wearing a blue, sleeveless shirt, with a crew-cut hair style and looking "like a construction worker." They said he may have gotten into a red car. They did not reveal if a weapon was used in the robbery, or how much money was taken. more

Editor's Note: Obituaries are never an easy thing to write. It may well be the last story written about that person — even though the memories go on forever. Working for a local newspaper, it can be especially poignant when it's someone you know. John and I have worked together through the years on various events in East Rockaway -- usually the Huckleberry Frolic. We would "debate" where the chairs would go, how to set up the tables, and we worked well together. Along with everyone else, I will miss John waving hello as he rides around East Rockaway in his truck. Always felt that he was watching out for all of us, as he is right now. Mary Malloy more
The League of Women Voters hosted a Meet the Candidates Night at East Rockaway High School on May 10. Three candidates, Patti Nicoletti, Kristin Ochtera and Sam Schwarzman are running for three available seats on the school board. Pat Sympson was the moderator. Thirteen questions were provided by members of the audience and answered by the three candidates. They had time for a three-minute summation at the end of the forum. more
The East Rockaway Village Board unanimously adopted its 2010-11 village budget of $8.9 million on April 19. The spending plan contains a 1.6 percent increase over the current budget and a 5.43 percent tax levy increase. The average homeowner will pay an extra $110 in taxes. more
