Central District students of the arts wowed an audience of their parents, teachers and school administrators with their musical and dramatic performances as well as presentations of the visual arts during the Bellmore-Merrick Cultural Arts Foundation’s 32nd annual luncheon at the Uniondale Marriott last Thursday.

In early June, Calhoun High School senior Erin Zseller will head to the war-ravaged nation of Uganda as part of a two-week volunteer mission sponsored by the non-profit organization Invisible Children.
Zseller was chosen from a pool of 10 Calhoun applicants, and she will be the fourth student from the school to make the trip to Uganda in the past three years.

Kennedy High School junior Ross Shulman returned to the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education meeting last Wednesday to make his case that the district should eliminate substitute-teachers to save money and preserve full-time teaching positions. Instead of substitutes, Shulman advocated for a plan to use empty general-purpose rooms and cafeterias to house students under the direction of aides when their teachers are absent.
