Merrick volunteer firefighters assisted a stranded motorist on the Meadowbrook Parkway.

A massive storm dumped nearly 10 inches of rain on the Merrick-Bellmore area from Saturday night into Sunday afternoon, flooding the Meadowbrook Parkway and homes throughout the community. At the storm’s height, rain was falling at a rate of more than an inch an hour. more

Members of the North Merrick Fire Department administered oxygen to a dog that was found unconscious during a house fire on Arms Avenue. The dog was taken to a nearby veterinarian and released an hour later, fully recovered.

Fire engulfs N. Merrick dry cleaner

Fire ripped through Abby’s Dry Cleaners in North Merrick just after midnight on Friday. The North Bellmore and North Merrick fire departments responded to the blaze, which engulfed the structure in flames. Police investigators said they consider the fire “suspicious.” more

North Merrick Fire Chief James Allen said he was pleased that his fellow firefighters came out to support him this morning in traffic court after a state trooper issued him a citation on the Meadowbrook Parkway in January. Allen refused to move his emergency vehicle, as ordered by the trooper, believing doing so would create unsafe working conditions for his volunteers.
