When Hurricane Sandy struck on Oct. 29, it severely damaged a number of Town of Hempstead facilities in the Bellmore-Merrick area. Repair work is under way, but it could be some time before they are up and running again. Particularly hard hit were the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, the Sanitation Department and the Merrick Senior Center.

The morning high tide brought flooding to low-lying streets in south Merrick and south Bellmore on Monday between 8 and 9 a.m. when a heavy tidal surge forced water through storm drains and onto roads. The tide was expected to reach its peak in the area at 9:28 a.m. before starting to recede at 9:50 a.m.

Dubbed a “superstorm” by weather forecasters, Hurricane Sandy pummeled Bellmore-Merrick with floodwaters that reached three to six feet in many parts of south Bellmore and south Merrick and destroyed homes and cars, while also bringing hurricane-force wind gusts that toppled trees, tore the siding off houses, and ripped apart fences and decks.

Six children, all of whom suffer from cerebral palsy and cannot speak, were taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow on Friday after the bus they were traveling in collided with a car on Meadowbrook Road in North Merrick, just outside the Brookside School, according to fire officials.
