There are five candidates for two seats on the Baldwin school board. The election will be held on May 15 from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. at Baldwin Senior High School. The last day to register to vote is May 10. The incumbent candidates for school board are Mary Jo O’Hagan, the current board president, and Robert “B.A.” Schoen. The challengers are Tracy Mahler, Eric Harrison and Michael Grannum. Below are profiles of each candidate.

The Baldwin Civic Association rallied the troops on a rainy May 5 for flower planting along Grand Avenue. The event was tied to a civic activism holiday called Join Hands Day and saw a contingent of kids getting their hands dirty to beautify a series of planters that BCA co-president Linda Degen said, “ran right through Baldwin.” The green-thumbed youths planted an estimated 10 flats of Marigolds in accordance with Baldwin’s designation as “Marigold City.” Some of the flowers were provided by the Town of Hempstead and others were donated by residents and local businesses.

Doctor Beverly Adler, a certified diabetes educator and Baldwin resident who also practices in town, gave a reading and donated two copies of her book to the Baldwin Public Library on May 6.

What began with a group of English as a Second Language students unable to afford prom attire has blossomed into a dress drive that may become an annual event. In the days before last year’s prom, Baldwin High School ESL teacher Adeline Scibelli faced a dilemma: A group of her students, some of them recently arrived from Haiti, were unable to afford the extravagant dresses that are all but the rule at proms in the U.S.

The Baldwin Civic Association addressed its members’ six most popular questions at an upbeat meeting on April 26 at Baldwin High School. After hearing a presentation from Board of Education Trustees B.A. Schoen and Laura Williams encouraging everyone to participate in the school board election and budget vote May 15, 50 or so BCA members sat down in six groups to brainstorm Baldwin’s hottest topics.

Baldwin resident and 2008 BHS grad Tim White recently returned from a remarkable adventure in the Amazon rainforest. White, 21, who will complete his studies at UCLA later this year, earned his slot on the expedition by participating in a prestigious and highly competitive “selection camp” held in Switzerland. During the selection process, 18 hopefuls vied for eight spots on a research exploration hosted by Mike Horn, founder of the Young Explorers Program. In an essay for the Herald, White describes claiming his berth, and the expedition to the Amazon.

Capping a basketball season many regarded as perfect — the Baldwin High School boys’ team won the Long Island title, and the girls claimed their third straight county crown — the Baldwin Board of Education celebrated the Bruins’ championship teams of 2012 on April 18.

Baldwin’s Melanie Martinez, who won the BHS talent show as a sophomore last year, will be appearing on the second season of MSG Varsity television’s “MSG Varsity’s Talent Show” on April 22 at 8 p.m. Martinez is entered in the individual vocalist category, and will perform the song “Money (That’s What I Want)” while accompanying herself on guitar.
