Trucking of raw sewage from Nassau County’s Bay Park treatment plant in East Rockaway to a pumping station on Merrick Road in Merrick is continuing as the county works to fix mechanical problems at the Bay Park plant, said Bill Fonda, a state Department of Environmental Conservation spokesman, in an interview on Thursday.

During the rough-and-tumble football season, the Calhoun Colts gather each Friday evening in the high school’s cafeteria for a meal prepared by their parents. Squad members’ plates overflow with spaghetti, ravioli, sausage and peppers, stuffed peppers, wings and chili.

Last January, the long trailer in the parking lot at the end of Bennington Avenue in Freeport projected an unwelcoming image. The cement-gray exterior looked sterile and institutional. The sign above the front door, “Workers Available,” was faded. The wooden steps leading inside were worn and rickety. And out back the siding had ripped off in a storm, exposing insulation.

Updated 5:45 p.m. on Dec. 27. A fierce winter storm that rolled into Bellmore-Merrick around 9 a.m. on Sunday continued to pound the community through Monday morning, dumping 12 to 20 inches of snow on the ground and buffeting the area with winds from 15 to 50 miles per hour. Temperatures dipped into the teens.
