David Feller, superintendent of the North Merrick School District and this year’s president of the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents, recently offered his views on the Common Core Learning Standards and Annual Professional Performance Review — controversial changes in school curricula, testing, and the way teachers and principals are evaluated, which New York has begun debuting. He spoke at a forum on education that several Republican state assemblymen from Long Island conducted on Oct. 24 at SUNY College at Old Westbury. Following are excerpts from his remarks:

Many South Shore homeowners are breathing easier thanks to Governor Cuomo’s decision last week to use money from the N.Y. State Housing Recovery Program to compensate those whose homes were damaged by Hurricane Sandy, but whose flood insurance claims were rejected by FEMA because the damage had been caused by “earth movement” rather than directly by floodwaters.

The North Bellmore-North Merrick Little League’s 9- and 10-year-old girls’ travel softball team, the Lady Rebels, are this year’s state softball champions in their age division. Not only that, but they finished the season in third place in the entire Northeast.
