Newsweek magazine and The Daily Beast, in its recently published “America’s Best High Schools” list, included 18 high schools from New York’s 4th Congressional District, which covers much of southwest Nassau County. All three of Bellmore-Merrick’s high schools –– Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham –– were on the list.

With a diverse lineup of Bellmore-Merrick Central High School district students, alumni and musicians from throughout Nassau County, more than a dozen bands battled it out at the Brookside School last week at a Bellmore-Merrick Community Wellness Council event that raised more than $2,500 for the council’s annual Midnight Madness drug- and alcohol-free post-prom party.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District must slash $2.2 million in spending from its 2013-14 budget to meet a state property-tax levy cap imposed by Governor Cuomo in June 2011. That could mean a wide range of cutbacks, from the elimination of summer school for all students except seniors to reconfiguring the anti-drug Athletes Helping Athletes program to reducing the number of junior-varsity games that are played in a season.

No doubt, 20-somethings entering the teaching profession these days face a daunting task in trying to land that first job at a time when school districts are slashing dozens of positions to reduce costs and meet a state-mandated 2 percent property-tax cap. Mike Dolber, a Merrick Avenue Middle School social studies teacher and president of the Bellmore-Merrick United Secondary Teachers union, understands their plight.

As everyone knows, the East Coast was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy on Oct. 29. People lost power. Many lost their homes. Some even lost their lives.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is planning an evening to offer local residents the opportunity to discuss the challenges that they faced during Hurricane Sandy. Titled “Coping with the Aftereffects of Superstorm Sandy: An Evening to Listen, Learn and Share,” the session will be led by credentialed disaster-support professionals from the American Red Cross, and will be held in the Mepham High School auditorium on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m.
