A 67-year old employee of Roosevelt Field mall was shot and seriously wounded Dec. 22 when, during a robbery at the mall’s Tourneau store, a gunman struggled with store security and a stray bullet hit the employee, who was uninvolved in the robbery. According to witnesses, police put the mall on lockdown for an hour, keeping thousands of people inside stores throughout the mall until the scene was proven to be safe.

During its Dec. 8 town board meeting, the Town of Hempstead released a list of 23 open, abandoned one family houses it had boarded, costing the town $11,232.12. The work was contracted to MGP Landscape Construction LLC of Smithtown. Hempstead town communications executives did not respond to requests as to the dates of the board-ups in time for the close of the newspaper.

Former State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and his son, Adam, were found guilty last Friday of all the corruption charges against them, bringing an end to Skelos’s more than 30 years in the Senate and kicking off a race to fill his now-vacant seat.
The jury deliberated the case for a day and a half before returning its verdict. Because of the conviction, Skelos automatically — and immediately — lost his seat in the Senate.

In May, President Obama signed an executive order to demilitarize the police, banning the Pentagon from issuing surplus military hardware — including rifles, grenade launchers and armored vehicles — to police departments nationwide. His decision was a response to the shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., by a police officer the previous August.
