A North Bellmore Fire Department volunteer was recently arrested and charged with setting fire to a car outside a local home, authorities said.Nassau County Police Department officials said that Matthew Greve, 25, was charged with third-degree arson at his arraignment on July 3. The felony charge stems from a May incident in which he allegedly set another man’s car on fire on purpose. more
Just a few weeks before Wellington C. Mepham High School’s class of 2013 celebrated commencement, one of the school’s first groups of graduates reconnected with one another at their 70th reunion. Nearly a dozen of the 68 remaining members of Mepham’s class of 1943 came together for the celebration at The Nook in Wantagh on June 7. The alumni scanned through their yearbook and other photos and memorabilia, remembering their high school days. more
The Bellmore and North Bellmore school districts said goodbye not only to beloved members of the faculty and staff in various buildings this June, but also to administrators who will officially retire on July 1. North Bellmore bid Superintendent Arnold Goldstein and seven other retirees farewell at a June 13 meeting of the Board of Education. District officials also thanked Trustee Rosemarie Corless for more than seven years of service. Corless will not sit on next year’s board, having lost her re-election bid in May. At Bellmore’s board meeting on June 18, Clifford Molinelli, the principal of the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, and three others were recognized. more
Bellmore-Merrick’s seniors celebrated their high school experiences while looking forward to the future at commencement exercises for Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham on Sunday. For the third straight year, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District held three separate graduation ceremonies at the NYCB Theater in Westbury, and officials said that each school had about 335 graduates. more
After an unprecedented tie in the contest for one seat on the North Bellmore Board of Education forced a runoff election, incumbent JoAnn DeLauter defeated Frank LaMagra in the second vote on June 25. DeLauter won her third term by 173 votes, with 556 votes to LaMagra’s 383. Of the 939 residents who voted in the special election, 87 did so by absentee ballot. more
Grand Avenue Middle School eighth-graders celebrated two years of study and discussed their futures in high school at their Moving-Up Day. Students said their final goodbyes to Grand Avenue at one of four ceremonies on June 7. Each program featured student speakers and performances by the school choir. more
A North Bellmore lawyer was recently named the 111th president of the Nassau County Bar Association. Peter Mancuso, 59, was sworn into his position with the largest suburban bar association in the country when Marian Rice’s one-year term ended on May 31. Mancuso is the first assistant district attorney to be elected as the organization’s president since it was founded in 1899. more

Dorothy Cheslock, 67, took her mother, Anoinette Vicoli, to the audiologist four years ago. They filled out the paperwork, but the doctor tried to hand it back to them because he thought they forgot to mention Vicoli’s existing conditions or medications. Cheslock noted there was no mistake, however, in spite of the medical staff’s disbelief when they saw her birthday on the forms –– June 11, 1913. more
