A North Bellmore man was charged in a recent statewide gun-show investigation by Attorney General A.G. Schneiderman.
Sam Savino of North Bellmore was one of 10 people arrested for failing to conduct required background checks before selling firearms. Savino is the only defendant from Nassau County charged in “Operation Background Bust.”

Parents of children in Gunther Elementary School’s class of 2013 gathered on Wednesday after the announcement that their school would likely close at the end of this school year. Anger and sadness resonated through the group. Parents said they were particularly upset that their children would lose the chance to graduate with their lifelong friends from the school where they grew up.

The Bellmores marked Veterans Day with two ceremonies on Nov. 11. Members of American Legion Post No. 948 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2770 held the ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park off Bedford Avenue in Bellmore Village. North Bellmore American Legion Post No. 1749 hosted its annual Veterans Day ceremony at the monument in front of Newbridge Road Elementary School.

North Bellmore School District’s Committee to Explore Educational Options came to the decision to recommend closing Gunther School Wednesday evening. The announcement came at the committee’s public meeting at Saw Mill School. Following a discussion of which of the six elementary schools made the most sense to close, the 21-member committee put the decision up to a vote. Twelve of the board members voted for closing Gunther as the most viable option.
