Big, blue canvas bags labeled “Little Anne” and “Baby Anne” sat at the entrance to the Merrick Avenue Middle School gymnasium last Thursday. Spread across the shiny wooden floor in neat rows were mannequins, a.k.a. dummies. And in a corner, physical-education teachers Art Canestro, Mallory Cogen and Jason Dove were showing a film that revealed the secrets to saving a life with only your hands and mouth to a class of eighth-graders.
Soon the students were kneeling before the mannequins, pumping the dummies’ chests with their locked hands and breathing into their plastic mouths.

Before Tuesday’s election, Bellmore-Merrick schools officials said they worried about whether their 2012-13 budgets would pass, knowing that they would have to keep spending the same as this school year if the budgets were to fail twice in public votes, potentially forcing them to cut millions of dollars in spending. Apparently they had nothing to fear.

In March, a group of Mepham High School students embarked on a “1,000 Bracelet Campaign,” a fundraiser focusing on Ugandan children who have been kidnapped and killed by Ugandan militant Joseph Kony, who has led an open rebellion against the Ugandan government since 1987.

Finding the right summer experience for a middle school-age child is, no doubt, tough for parents. The Bellmore-Merrick Central School District and the Barry and Florence Friedberg Jewish Community Center, with offices in Merrick and Oceanside, are teaming up this summer to provide a reasonably priced, fun-filled camp for children entering seventh and eighth grades in September.
