At the Jan. 5 meeting of the Central High School District Board of Education, Eric Strezenec, the father of a Calhoun High School athlete, called on the board to offer exact figures on the cost of installing three synthetic-turf fields at Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham high schools, including how much the project would raise local property taxes.

Bellmore-Merrick business owners said in an informal Herald survey that they welcome the new year after a tough 2010. This past year, they said, they saw ups and downs in sales, with fluctuations in an economy that was attempting to right itself after one of the worst recessions in U.S. history.

Joshua Golub, a Calhoun High School senior, was recently named a semifinalist in the 2010-11 Coca-Cola Scholars Program. About 2,100 high school seniors, out of 71,000 applications, are in the running for $3 million in scholarships offered by the program. Two hundred and fifty finalists will be chosen to travel to Atlanta in April for a final interview.

When it comes to school, my philosophy is that almost everything follows the “10-year rule.” That is, in 10 years, nearly all students will probably forget almost everything that they have learned unless they continue to use the knowledge they have acquired. Because of this, classes cannot be based on rote memorization.

Grand Avenue Middle School promotes a community of caring for all, school officials say. To further that environment, a new program, “Grand Gives Back,” was launched in September. Through the program, Grand Avenue selects different organizations each month to raise money for. Students, faculty and staff members are encouraged to donate to charities.

The Kennedy High School cheerleading squad recently captured the Valley Stream North High School County Cheerleading Competition, and the team was honored with certificates at the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education meeting on Jan. 5.

Kennedy High School recently held “Jam the Gym –– Wrestling Night,” at which the school honored wrestling alumni, including former Kennedy wrestling great Steve Hunte.

During the rough-and-tumble football season, the Calhoun Colts gather each Friday evening in the high school’s cafeteria for a meal prepared by their parents. Squad members’ plates overflow with spaghetti, ravioli, sausage and peppers, stuffed peppers, wings and chili.

Updated 5:45 p.m. on Dec. 27. A fierce winter storm that rolled into Bellmore-Merrick around 9 a.m. on Sunday continued to pound the community through Monday morning, dumping 12 to 20 inches of snow on the ground and buffeting the area with winds from 15 to 50 miles per hour. Temperatures dipped into the teens.
