Robert and Susan Cirigliano and Michelle Witt testified about the deaths of their children in dropside cribs before the Nassau County Legislature on Monday. The Legislature voted unanimously to ban the cribs.
County bans sale of dropside cribs
Bobby Cirigliano of North Bellmore lived for six months and three days. He died Sept. 15, 2004, when his head was caught in between the dropside rail and the mattress of his crib, and he suffocated. He was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. He never returned home. more

All five local school districts –– including the Bellmore-Merrick Central, and Bellmore, Merrick, North Bellmore and North Merrick elementary districts –– had part of their state allotments for December held back after Gov. David Paterson ordered the payments halted so the state could stay solvent. more

At a news conference last week, Lenny Rosado, left, joined by State Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr., center, and Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, warned would-be drunk drivers that "the party's over" with Leandra's Law now in effect. The law was named for Leandra Rosado, Lenny's daughter, who died in an accident with a drunken driver last summer. Under the new statute, anyone who drives drunk with a child in the vehicle can be charged with a felony.

Nor'easter pounds Bellmore-Merrick
A nor'easter made its way up the Eastern Seaboard on Saturday, pounding Merrick-Bellmore in the evening with a mix of heavy snow and high winds. The storm began with flurries, but quickly turned into a full-fledged blizzard. At 6 p.m., the prognosticators were predicting six to 18 inches of snow. more
