Current students at Gunther Elementary in North Bellmore will enroll at new schools in the fall because their school will close in June, and many parents felt that asking them to also figure out their own transportation was too much.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District swim team, the Sharks, recently took part in the Long Beach Polar Bear Super Bowl Sunday Splash to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Their efforts, combined with support from their families, friends and teachers, enabled them to raise more than $3,300 for the cause.

Saul Lerner, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s athletic director, learned recently that Butch Yamali, a Merrick Board of Education trustee and restaurateur, bought the Sands in Lido Beach and the Coral House in Baldwin. Therein, Lerner saw an opportunity to help feed the poor.

According to the Nassau County district attorney's office, a jury will likely be selected on Feb. 13 for the trial of former Nassau County legislators Roger Corbin and Patrick Williams, who were indicted by the D.A.'s office in July 2010 on corruption, larceny and bribery charges for their alleged involvement in multiple bid-rigging and bribery schemes in the New Cassel Redevelopment Project.

On Jan. 17, in front of New York’s policymakers, Governor Cuomo announced his 2012-13 budget. The governor used the speech to apply pressure to our state’s unions, interest groups and school districts by defiantly stating, take what we’re offering or make due without state funding.

Kelly Bogart is like many dedicated Calhoun High School students. Heavily involved in clubs and sports, the 18-year-old senior is a member of the concert choir and Science Olympiads, and has participated on the lacrosse and track teams. She’s also in two Advanced Placement classes. Each day before school, she packs her pens, pencils and notebooks. The only difference is that she also carries a .117 caliber air rifle. Hey, they don’t call her “Shooter” for nothing.

The Middle Country School District in Suffolk County faces a $10.3 million budget deficit in 2012-13 because of Governor Cuomo’s vaunted 2 percent property-tax levy cap, so Middle Country is considering eliminating its pre-school program, reducing full-day kindergarten to a half-day and axing sports and after-school clubs for middle and high school students, according to News12.
