Another Columbus Day has brought more accolades for the East Meadow School District’s music program. For the first time, the East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high school marching bands took the top two spots in the annual parade in New York City marking the holiday. East Meadow took first, and Clarke second.

At a Board of Education meeting on Oct 22, East Meadow School District trustees voted unanimously to extend the contract of Leon Campo, who has served as the district’s interim superintendent since July, until June 30, 2017.

A week after McVey Elementary School learned that student “opt-outs” in last April’s state exams cost the school a Blue Ribbon award, a coveted national honor given to schools that exemplify academic excellence by the U.S. Education Department, McVey’s PTA surprised Principal Kerry Dunne by presenting her with an honorary placard to recognize the school’s success.

Hundreds of residents will be lacing up their running shoes this Sunday at McVey Elementary School as they get set to run in the third annual McVey 5K and 1-mile fun-run. This year’s race will included added festivities — an Octoberfest fall festival, arranged by the school’s Parent Teacher Association.
