Seven officers from the East Rockaway Auxiliary Police Unit were honored for their service to the community at the 28th annual Nassau county Auxiliary Police Longevity and Service Awards Ceremony at county police headquarters in Mineola on April 7. Among them was Deputy Inspector Diane LauKaitis, who was presented with the Commissioner’s Award. Officers Michael Babcock, Matthew Andrzejewski, Michele Bonday, Eric LauKaitis and Steven Watanabe were recognized for their service time to the volunteer unit. more
East Rockaway Recreation hosted its annual Easter Egg Hunt last Saturday — and even the wind and a little cold air couldn’t keep away the local children — or the Easter Bunny, who showed up to greet the crowd. Eggs were scattered around the John Street Complex starting at 10 a.m. as children scramled to collect them — many hoping to find the coveted Golden Egg (for a special prize.) Every child went home with a bag of goodies (put together by members of Life’s Worc in East Rockaway) and with a smile on their collective faces. Happy Easter! more

East Rockaway’s baseball team snapped a three-game losing streak with sweep of last week’s home-and-home series with Cold Spring Harbor. Senior pitcher Luke Burggraf gave up two hits and struck out 10 over five innings to lead the Rocks to a 7-2 home victory April 14. more

Extreme amounts of shoreline trash have been reported by residents of East Rockaway and Bay Park. Coffee cups, water bottles, and assorted litter can also be seen all over Long Island’s south shore waterways. Many people think that litter in the Bay Park area is a result of careless boaters but that is not the case: street litter from as far north as Garden City washes into storm drains that empty, unfiltered, directly into south shore waterways. more

The Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre will be hosting noted Holocaust speaker Marion Blumenthal Lazan on May 2 at 7:30 p.m. for its Yom HaShoah Memorial as she recalls the devastating years that shaped her childhood. Lazan is the author of “Four Perfect Pebbles — A Holocaust Story.” more
Twenty-six-year East Rockaway resident and Army veteran Richard Gogarty, 54, has been appointed by the village board as the trustee to fill Irene Villacci’s seat. Villacci resigned from the position last week. “Because I’ve served 20 years on active duty in the Army, I’ve had an opportunity to see cities and towns over the United States and the world,” Gogarty said. “After seeing all that, I moved to East Rockaway. This is my dream place — a small village in the middle of millions of people. … East Rockaway maintains the independent spirit and closeness found only in a small village.” more
