The Herald will be running a series of issue-based stories from now until the village election on March 15. As the campaigns begin to heat up, the candidates are outspoken on issues that are important to them and to their constituents. From what we hear, a public debate may be in the works, too. The Pride Party’s candidates include Francis Lenahan, who is running for mayor; Stanley Lombaro and Ed Corrado, who are running for trustees seats. The Freedom Party consisted of Richard Meagher, who is running for mayor; and Bobby Klose and Harry Levitt, who are eying the two open trustee seats. The mayoral seat is currently vacant since the sudden death of Ed Sieban last July. Meagher is currently the village’s deputy mayor. more
After a duck hunter lost his watercraft, he became stranded on the marsh south of Bay Park in East Rockaway. With his dog wet from being in the freezing water and with the temperature dropping fast, the East Rockaway Fire Department, along with Nassau County Police Marine units were called to the location. more
In the past, midway through the season East Rockaway would be looking ahead to a deep playoff run. In 2010-2011, however, the Lady Rocks are still seeking their first victory. more
Molloy College and East Rockaway Junior and Senior High School athletes, as well as other interested parties, may soon have the fields of their dreams — or at least a decent place to hold their practices and games. The college and county officials recently reached an agreement to upgrade and improve Bay Park’s neglected and often waterlogged ball fields and tennis courts. more
When you ask people who know Bob Sympson to describe him, four words come up again and again: talented, tenacious, tree lover. “He is so committed, so dedicated, and truly a tenacious man,” said his wife, Pat Sympson. “When he sets his mind to do something, he’ll work very hard to accomplish it.” His tireless work with trees and educating the community about them, along with his lifelong conservation efforts, are just some of the reasons that Sympson is the Herald’s 2010 Person of the Year. more
