The East Rockaway School District still has one more budget hearing before its Board of Education votes to adopt the 2010-11 spending plan, but as of now, it contains a 2.19 percent budget increase from the current year's plan with a tax levy increase in the range of 2.76 to 4.76 percent. School officials said that since the state has not finalized its budget, state aid numbers can change, and that can change the tax levy. more
The seniors at East Rockaway High School earned the coveted Cup last weekend during the school's 74th annual Rock Rivalry competition. Points were tallied and included Sports Night, Entrance, mural, backdrop, scriptwriting, choreography, band, lighting, sound, etc. The seniors' score tied for one other class in the history of RR for having the most points in its 74-year history. All of the classes did wonderfully, with entertaining and orginal skits and songs. more
It is interesting to note that from the time East Rockaway High School opened its doors in September 1936, Rock Rivalry has been an integral part of each school year, first being held in December 1936. more
The students at Rhame Avenue Elementary School in East Rockaway raised $2,486 for the American Heart Association during their Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart programs — The highest total that Rhame has ever raised for the American Heart Association. more
Dylan Gross, a junior at East Rockaway Jr/Sr High School, has been elected Lieutenant Governor to Division 7 of the New York District of Key Club International, a Kiwanis International Service Leadership Program for high school students, for the 2010-2011 academic year. more

Michael McHale, a 16-year-old student at Lynbrook High School, was hit by a westbound, non-passenger train at the Lynbrook Long Island Rail Road station at about 5:40 p.m. on March 9, Metropolitan Transit Authority officials said. McHale was later pronounced dead at South Nassau Communities Hospital. The Lynbrook Fire Department was called to the station platform, answering a report of a person being hit by a train, said Steve Grogan, spokesman for the department. Grogan said McHale did not respond to resusitation efforts, and was rushed to the hospital. Sam Zambuto, spokesman for the Long Island Rail Road, said that the MTA police are investigating the incident as a possible suicide. As a result of the incident, service was affected on the Babylon branch, and riders were redirected to the Long Beach branch, according to Zambuto. more
