Merrick Herald reporter David Weingrad of North Merrick, at back in blue shirt, recently took a diving class with Hempstead Town instructor Anthony Carbone, in yellow, at Newbridge Road Park pool in Bellmore. Weingrad joined a class of children from Park Avenue Elementary School and wrote a column about his experience learning how to dive. Above were Weingrad’s diving buddies, from left, Danny Shami, 8, Grace Glynn, 6, Miranda Price, 9, Carbone, Khristo Shami, 10, and Violla Shami, 6.

I am 25 years old, and until recently, I had never dived into the water. Call me crazy, but the prospect of plunging headfirst into a deep pool of blue had always spurred a sense of anxiety in me. The photo and the following information was submitted by John Bishop This is a view of the Grand Canal Basin looking south towards the bay. It is probably from around 1915 or so. The bulkheading was finished.The “blip” on the left in the back is the developers office which was moved to Rhame Ave where it is now a private home on the west side between Franklin and Adams Streets. Much of the bulkheading on the west side was done by my uncle, Fred Forman of Catskill NY. He was born in Holland and a specialist in dams and bulkheads.There were no homes built nor streets paved at this time. North Boulevard was to be called East Rockaway Boulevard. I was told that both model homes that existed were priced at $1,500 with financing by the Realty Associates.
