Unbeknown to many, one of the pioneers of modern music makes his living on the South Shore. Anyone who has studied music at Hofstra University would recognize him, as he has been teaching at the school for 51 years. His name is Herbert Deutsch, and he lives in Massapequa Park with his wife, Nancy. In 1964, at age 32, he co-invented the Moog synthesizer, helping to pave the way for electronic music.

It's time to enjoy those July Fourth fireworks. The pyrotechnics are always glorious and with the holiday falling midweek – on Wednesday this year – the festivities begin early, so we can partake of holiday merriment throughout the week.

The heat is on, and with it, that delightful season of outddoor theatricals gets underway. Lunbrook-based Plaza Theatrical Productions starts things off with its staging of "The Producers" at Eisenhower Park's Lakeside Theatre. There's also a "Midsummer Nights'dance performance at Old Westbury Gardens. And Hofstra offers its "Hollywood Live" musical revue.
