Late summer is a musical time throughout the area. The Long Island Philharmonic visits Eisenhower Park for a delightful evening of popular classics on Friday. Over at Long Island Children's Museum, The Silly Dilly Band entertains kids of all ages with their musical hi-jinks, along with a theatrical adaptation of the popular Dora the Explorer television series, on Sunday.

It was a scorching hot day on Long Island on July 22, but it didn’t stop hundreds of people from seeing two bands who, despite playing for nearly two decades, can still draw a crowd. The day was reminiscent of any summer in the 1990s — people were sitting in lawn chairs with coolers, listening to the Spin Doctors and the Gin Blossoms.

“On behalf of the taxpayers of the Bay Park Fire District, I would like to thank Assemblyman Weisenberg for his leadership in passing legislation that will allow us to provide residents with much-needed tax relief without compromising the fire district’s ability to respond in emergencies.”
So said Roger Humes, a commissioner of the Bay Park Fire District, in response to Weisenberg’s authoring of a law — at the request of the Bay Park Fire District — that will offset local property taxes.

For a moment, I stopped paddling and took in Merrick Bay, its virtually still surface glistening in the morning sunlight. In the distance, the Jones Beach water tower and amphitheater stood out amid a light haze. The view was, in a word, breathtaking.
