Lynbrook schools help Haiti

Posted

Moved by the plight of the Haitian people in the wake of that country’s devastating earthquake, students and staff of Lynbrook Public Schools have rallied together to contribute to disaster relief efforts. Each school organized its own activities to raise funds. At the end of the fundraising campaign they will pool their monies to make one contribution to a designated charity. As of January 28, students, parents and staff members had already raised $4,700. Many more activities planned for February.

High School students participated in Hats for Haiti Day, each contributing $2 to be able to wear a hat to school, raising over $1,300 in one day.

North Middle School organized a similar fundraising event called Team Up for Haiti. Students were asked to contribute $1 to $3 each to wear their favorite team jerseys to school. Teachers and staff contributed $5 to $10 each. They also sold bracelets, raising a total of $900 to date, between all their efforts.

At South Middle School, students raised over $1,000 through a series of activities. They sold pretzels, popcorn, baked good, and bracelets, and held a Hat Day and a Hawaiian Day. On Valentine’s Day they will be selling Friend O’ Grams. They also collected clothing and shoes and toiletry items for the Haiti Relief Fund in Lynbrook.

The Marion Street school community has decided to coordinate a project every month for Haitian relief. Students began by selling Relief-Rebuild-Recover bracelets. Parents will be doing their part this month by buying red paper Hearts for Haiti. Students have set an ambitious goal to encircle the school hallways with hearts. They will also be organizing a raffle.

At West End’s Family Fun Night, the Student Council will be raffling off a basket to benefit the Red Cross. As an ongoing fundraiser, students will be selling bracelets.

Student Council members at Waverly Park School created handmade Hearts for Haiti bracelets, raising over $1,500 in one day.

Teachers at the Kindergarten Center also became involved by sponsoring a Dress Down Day, with each teacher who participated donating a minimum of $5 to the Haitian Relief Effort.
