RVC schools celebrate moving up day

Moving up day is a time-honored tradition in the Rockville Centre School District that signifies a pivotal moment in a student’s academic progress as they “move up” from one school to the next.

Students in the eighth-grade class at South Side Middle School celebrated the next phase of their educational journey with parents and faculty members on June 21. They will go on to start their freshman year at South Side High School in September.

Fifth-grade students in all five elementary schools — Francis F. Wilson, William S. Covert, Floyd B. Watson, Jennie E. Hewitt, and Riverside — celebrated moving up day on June 24 and 25, by bidding their teachers one final farewell as they set to embark on the next stage of their education at South Side Middle School.

Even the youngest students in the Rockville Centre School District’s universal pre-kindergarten program at the Friedberg JCC in Oceanside celebrated moving up day as they look forward to starting elementary school.

Students reflected on their past academic achievements and embraced what’s to come next school year, while school principals, teachers and guest speakers provided some inspirational words to motivate their young minds and encourage them to face future challenges with confidence and resilience.

Parents also played an integral role in the moving up day ceremonies, because it is thanks to their unwavering support and encouragement that their children continue to excel.

Following the festivities, families gathered with their graduates to capture all the joy of this momentous milestone. This occasion is more than just a simple ceremony — it is a rite of passage that fosters a sense of continuity, achievement and community within the Rockville Centre schools. As students move up to their next educational stage, they carry with them the lessons learned and memories made, well-prepared for the exciting journey ahead.
