On Sunday, November 1st, several members of the East Rockaway Junior Fire Department attending a training session at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy in Bethpage.

This event, sponsored by the Nassau County Junior Firefighter’s Association, was set up to allow the Juniors to train in real buildings and with real firefighting equipment, while at the same time allowing them to work with members of other departments from across Nassau County.

The Juniors were trained in numerous firefighting functions including forcible entry, hose line advancement and operations, ladders, as well as search and rescue. While no actual smoke or fire was utilized, all of the Juniors came away with a new sense of how serious, difficult and dangerous the job of a firefighter truly is. Approximately 120 boys and girls were in attendance and all went home both well educated and exhausted.

The East Rockaway Junior Fire Department is always looking for new members. Boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 17 who are interested in learning about and participating in firefighting and EMS activities should visit www.eastrockawayfd.org and click on “members” and “members wanted” and fill out the form.
