Lynbrook High School senior Matt Wohlmacher has been named a News 12 Scholar Athlete for his achievements in the classroom and on the athletic Field.

Wohlmacher joins fellow senior Jessica Rosen, of Hewlett Harbor, who was given the distinction last December.

Matt led the Owls back to the county finals in football, as the team compiled a 9-2 overall record. He was named an All-County athlete, and was also named to the prestigious National Football Foundation’s Golden “eleven” Scholar Athlete team, (top 11 Scholar Athletes in Nassau County) along with teammate Chris McGrane.

Matt is an AP scholar, and is a member of the National Honor Society and ACE (Athletes Creating Excellence). He also performs in the orchestra and is a staff writer for Horizon, the high school newspaper. In addition, Matt has been selected to participate in National Leadership Summit and the Congressional Student Leadership Congress, and was nominated for the National Society of High School Scholars.

Matt is involved with many community service projects around Lynbrook, including peer tutoring, St. Raymond’s Parish Social Ministry and the LHS Holiday Gift drive. He is also a counselor at the Lynbrook Youth Football Camp held at Greis Park each August.

Jessica (Jessy) was named Scholar Athlete for her all-around achievement in scholarship, athletics, leadership and school service.

In addition to being an All-County basketball and volleyball player, and an All-Division softball player, Jessy represented the U.S. last summer as a member of the US Junior National Girls Basketball Team at the 18th World Maccabiah Games in Tel Aviv Israel, where she helped lead her team to a gold medal. She was also named a New York State Finalist in the Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholarship competition.

Jessica is an AP Scholar with Honors, a member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. She also received a National English Merit Award from the United States Achievement Academy. She has exercised her leadership skills as president of the LHS Student Body and as captain of the Varsity Volleyball team. She also served in past years as Student Body secretary and treasurer.

Among her many community service activities, Jessy is a student mentor in the Athletes Creating Excellence program, and has participated in Relay for Life, Breast Cancer Walks, the Mitch Cangelosi Memorial Walk, and a Dig Pink! Volleyball fundraiser. She has also been involved in Thanksgiving Food Drives to benefit the Interfaith Nutrition Network.

Although she has not yet finalized any college plans yet, Jessy’s goal is to play college basketball in an academically enriching environment.
