Faces of desperation abound at Red Cross shelter
In a quiet corner of the main gymnasium at Nassau Community College’s athletic center in Garden City, where basketball games and wrestling matches are normally held, Red Cross volunteers have fashioned a small, makeshift daycare center out of room dividers, pinning up newsprint where children can draw pictures in crayon. Christiano Marcello, Fenol LaRock and Antonio Marcello aim to bring the Elmont community together throughout the year with events like basketball tournaments, a back-to-school drive, Thanksgiving dinner, and a Christmas celebration. Their aspiration is to build a community center in Elmont for the community to have a place to gather recreationally. And those efforts have made them the Franklin Square/Elmont Herald Persons of the Year.

More than two-dozen people rallied outside of Stewart Manor School last week, calling for the removal of Elmont education board trustee Michael Jaime, who was reportedly overheard last month calling someone in the audience a vulgar name during a board meeting.
