Lucille (Sussman) Gruberg, 88, of Franklin Square, died on June 10, in Longmeadow, Mass. Born in Portsmouth, N.H., Gruberg graduated in 1941 from Haverhill High School in Massachusetts and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Queens College in New York. She taught English at Elmont Memorial High School for 22 years.

Marilyn June Russell Healey, 78, a former student at Sewanhaka High School, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2011. Her son and daughter were by her side when she died peacefully at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, North Carolina.

Sewanhaka High School’s 2011 valedictorian is Armaghan Behlum. Since leaving his native country, Pakistan, with his family when he was 3 years old, he has conducted research in microbiology, been named an AP Scholar, and was named to every departmental Honor Society.

An AP Scholar and member of the National Honor Society, Julian Clemente is Elmont Memorial High School’s 2011 valedictorian. He was inducted into the Math Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and also participated in several clubs, including Mathletes, Class of 2011 and Students Against Destructive Decisions.

It’s safe to say that most kids these days have enough on their plate. Between school work, sports practices and music lessons, there’s rarely an open minute in their day. However, 53 fifth and sixth-graders in the Dutch Broadway School’s Joy of Reading program, which wrapped up on June 7, proved otherwise.

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced on June 10 that his office completed audits of several school districts statewide, including the Elmont Union Free School District. The audit was initiated by the state nearly one year ago.
Auditors found that Elmont’s Board of Education inappropriately delegated the discretionary functions of approving purchase orders, journal entries and wire transfers to its business consultant, Tom Galante. Thus, Galante was responsible for approving all district purchases, including the purchase of his own services.
