Call it a tale of two forests. On the west side of the Meadowbrook Parkway, on the outskirts of Freeport and Roosevelt, there is the 73-acre Roosevelt Preserve, owned and maintained by Nassau County. There, the wide paths are clear of fallen trees and shrubbery and virtually trash-free. Following Sewanhaka Central High School District superintendent Warren Meierdierck’s announcement last December that he would be retiring in June, the district has been working to find a new superintendent to take his place. The district’s Board of Education placed advertisement in The New York Times, held a search meeting in March, and has been receiving leads from a search firm over the past few months. During the Sewanhaka district’s last BOE meeting, on May 3, BOE president Jean Fichtl announced that Dr. Ralph Ferrie will be the district’s new superintendent, beginning July 1. more

Hundreds of high school students gathered to frivolously debate national issues on April 9, during the annual Lee Markus Sewanhaka Inter-School District Model United Nations competition. The event was held at the Sewanhaka High School, and students from the Elmont Memorial, Floral Park Memorial, H. Frank Carey, New Hyde Park and Sewanhaka high schools represented countries from the United Kingdom to Azerbaijan, taking up their respective interests and debating issues passionately, from early morning until sunset. more
The Elmont Union Free School District’s Jazz Masters program has been turning musically talented students on to the blues and jazz genres for the past nine years. The program, which focuses on improvisation and higher tempos, is highly selective — students have to be recommended by their music teachers before participating. more
