An infectious, carefree smile and jovial attitude: that is how many Sewanhaka High School students will remember Naquan Bell, 21, and Bell's uncle, Brendon McRae, 24, who were both Sewanhaka students. Bell and McRae died in a car accident on Sunday, Feb. 13, along with friend Stanley Sagesse, 23, a Uniondale graduate and Hempstead resident. The three young men were heading home from a birthday gathering, when they struck a bridge embankment on the eastbound side of the Southern State Parkway. more
Gerald Waldman, of Huntington, the former assistant principal of Sewanhaka High School, was arraigned on charges of grand larceny and official misconduct on Feb. 18, accused of taking $113,000 from a union fund. Waldman, 59, was arrested by investigators from the Nassau County district attorney’s office. more

The American Legion of Nassau County held its 73rd Annual National High School Oratorical Contest at the Elmont Memorial Library on Saturday, Feb. 12, where four high school students from Nassau County competed for the honor of competing at the New York State final event, which will be held in Albany in March, where a winner will be chosen to compete at the national competition in April. Approximately 75 New York American Legion members attended the event. more
The Sewanhaka High School’s Cosmetology Department volunteered their time after school on Tuesday, Feb. 8, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., to raise money for cancer survivors and previvors. A total of $1,126 was raised by nearly 60 participating cosmetology students at Sewanhaka High School, located at 500 Tulip Ave. in Floral Park. Teachers Maryanne Contarino, Grace Jennings, Virginia Amadi and Ann DiMaria were also very involved. more
After hearing Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s budget release in early February, the Sewanhaka, Franklin Square and Elmont school districts have been on their feet, working to incorporate heavy school aid cuts and a proposed 2 percent property tax cap into their budgets. The tax cap, which was recently passed by the Senate and would take 76 of 150 votes in the Assembly to fully pass, wouldn’t go into effect until 2013, but districts are preparing ahead of time. more
