Thomas Bennet Sr., an Elmont resident and veteran of the Korean War, where he received a Purple Heart, passed away last January. On June 16, nearly 100 members of the Elmont community, including students and faculty of the Gotham Avenue School, attended a ceremony to dedicate a portion of the school’s “9/11 Garden” — which honors those killed during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, as well as local veterans — to Bennet.

Pres. Barack Obama announced last Sunday that Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, was killed by American troops in Pakistan in April. The news has impacted Americans throughout the nation, but hits especially hard for New Yorkers. Some locals personally knew individuals who were killed during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
