Every day, nine children die of drowning in the United States, and the drowning rate is three times higher in low-income communities. Over the past four years, the American Red Cross in Nassau County has been working to address the problem locally, and is now planning to administer a free swim program for students in the Elmont Union Free School District.

Nassau County police officer Michael J. Califano, 44, was killed while performing a traffic stop on the Long Island Expressway on Saturday, Feb. 5. Califano was assigned to the Highway Patrol Bureau, and was killed when his patrol car was struck by a truck as he conducted a vehicle stop.

Five Nassau County gun shop owners –– including an East Meadow resident who owns a shop in Merrick and a Bellmore resident who owns shops in New Hyde Park and Seaford –– have been arrested and charged with illegally selling assault weapons, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced on Thursday. UPDATE: On April 19, 2012, all charges against Michael Marinello and South Shore Sportsman, Inc., were dismissed by Judge F. Ricigliano in First District Court, Nassau County.

The American Legion of Nassau County held its 73rd Annual National High School Oratorical Contest at the Elmont Memorial Library on Saturday, Feb. 12, where four high school students from Nassau County competed for the honor of competing at the New York State final event, which will be held in Albany in March, where a winner will be chosen to compete at the national competition in April. Approximately 75 New York American Legion members attended the event.

A passerby found the body of a badly burned man in Lawrence at around 2 a.m. last Wednesday morning. According to the latest reports, the victim was a homeless man who had tried to stay warm through the freezing night by lighting a fire in a cooking can.
