Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice and County Executive Edward P. There was an unmistakable smell of stagnant water and earth at the Dutch Broadway Athletic Complex, on the west side of Elmont, after a record rainstorm on Aug. 14 flooded the area with nearly five feet of water. What was once a 15-acre park with a large soccer field now more closely resembles a swamp — including the insects. more

At the Elmont Memorial Library Board of Trustees’ Reorganization Meeting July 21, Joanne Mazzeo was named the board’s new president. Mazzeo, an Elmont resident for nearly 30 years, was first elected to the board in 2007 to fill the remaining three years of Brian Lynn’s vacated seat. She served that three-year term — two years as vice president — and ran again in 2010, winning a five-year term. more
Maggie Gough, the director of the Elmont Memorial Library, submitted a letter on Aug. 15 announcing her decision to resign. Gough’s resignation will be effective at the close of business on Sept. 2. more
The Elmont Panthers Track Club is one of the largest and most active running clubs on Long Island, offering a variety of activities, including competitive meets and recreational runs. The group has had several nationally ranked athletes, including All-Americans, but its runners vary widely in age and ability, and there is one obvious connective thread within the group: a passion for running. more
The Aug. 14 storm dumped as much as 11 inches of rain on some areas of Long Island, causing several local water emergencies. After the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament’s record-breaking turnout of more than 4,500 on July 16, the Elmont community couldn’t have been prouder. The tournament is held annually for fifth-grade to college students. more
