Lucille (Sussman) Gruberg, 88, of Franklin Square, died on June 10, in Longmeadow, Mass. Born in Portsmouth, N.H., Gruberg graduated in 1941 from Haverhill High School in Massachusetts and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Queens College in New York. She taught English at Elmont Memorial High School for 22 years.

An AP Scholar and member of the National Honor Society, Julian Clemente is Elmont Memorial High School’s 2011 valedictorian. He was inducted into the Math Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and also participated in several clubs, including Mathletes, Class of 2011 and Students Against Destructive Decisions.

It’s safe to say that most kids these days have enough on their plate. Between school work, sports practices and music lessons, there’s rarely an open minute in their day. However, 53 fifth and sixth-graders in the Dutch Broadway School’s Joy of Reading program, which wrapped up on June 7, proved otherwise.

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced on June 10 that his office completed audits of several school districts statewide, including the Elmont Union Free School District. The audit was initiated by the state nearly one year ago.
Auditors found that Elmont’s Board of Education inappropriately delegated the discretionary functions of approving purchase orders, journal entries and wire transfers to its business consultant, Tom Galante. Thus, Galante was responsible for approving all district purchases, including the purchase of his own services.

Sanitary District 6 is the largest special district in the state, and provides services to 36,000 homes in Elmont, Franklin Square, North Valley Stream, Garden City South, Lakeview, South Floral Park, West Hempstead and a portion of Malverne. But some local residents say the district, as well as local residents, aren't doing enough to keep the community clean.

Elmont is about to get a little more country.
For the first time in history, an organized farmer’s market will be held in the community, beginning Thursday, June 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Alva T. Stanforth Sports Complex — the lawn area just west of the Elmont Memorial Library, at 700 Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont.

In addition to the county’s plans for redeveloping Nassau Colisuem, Mangano announced in May that he would be teaming with Sens. Dean Skelos (R-NY) and Jack Martins (R-Elmont) to pursue a gaming casino at Belmont Park, developed by the Shinnecock Indian Nation. Once approved by federal and state officials, Mangano said, he believes the casino will create thousands of additional local jobs.
