The Sewanhaka Central High School District, one of the largest school districts in Nassau County, passed its 2011-12 budget last week, with 4,628 votes supporting it and 3,028 opposing it. This year’s turnout of 7,656 voters was significantly lower than last year, when nearly 10,000 people voted on the current school spending plan.

The Elmont Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 30, beginning at 10:30 a.m., at the Sewanhaka High School, located at 500 Tulip Ave. in Floral Park. The parade will travel south on Covert Avenue, to Hempstead Turnpike, then turns west on the turnpike, ending at the Elmont Memorial Library, located at 700 Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont. The parade is expected to end around 11:15 a.m.

When 19-year-old Herman Eli Soblick was drafted into the Army in June 1944, he was following in his family’s footsteps. Soblick’s father, a Russian immigrant, had served in World War I, and was disabled after being gassed as a prisoner of war. Herman’s two older brothers, Ira and Sam, were drafted into the Army to serve in World War II shortly before he was.
“My father told us, ‘Be a good soldier and you’ll come home,’” recalled Soblick, who is now 87. “And we all did.”

The Elmont Fire Department was alerted of a house fire at 275 Emily Ave. in Elmont on May 7, at 7:03 p.m. Elmont Chief Mike Capoziello said the fire, which had fully engulfed the second floor of the home, was venting itself out a second floor window at the rear of the home.

The Elmont Union Free School District's 2011-12 budget passed today, after 1,861 voters came out to the polls to share their opinions about the budget. 1,124 residents supported the budget, and 737 residents voted "no." Last year, 1,677 local residents voted in support of Elmont’s 2010-11 budget, and 1,001 residents voted against it.
