The girls Jigs Fire 02 soccer team, which includes girls from throughout Nassau County and Queens and is part of the Elmont Youth Soccer Club, will be competing in the second round of the New York Club Soccer League Cup on April 30, at 5:30 p.m., at the Dutch Broadway School soccer field in Elmont. The all-girls club, which has included the same group of second- and third-grade girls for the past two years, recently made it out of the first round of the New York Cup — a tournament established earlier this year by the Just Say Soccer league — and are one of 16 teams competing in the second round.

Marie Giambalvo, who passed away in February at the age of 96, was a longtime member of the Elmont East End Civic Association and other local groups, and lived on Clement Avenue in Elmont for most of her life.

Elmont natives Bill and Jim Germanakos, the fourth-season champions of NBC’s popular prime-time show “The Biggest Loser,” just keep on winning. Bill, who was declared the winner and received $250,000, and Jim — who was eliminated early in the competition but won first prize among the eliminated contestants and was awarded $100,000 — have managed to maintain both healthy lifestyles and successful careers.

The most accomplished team in Elmont boys’ basketball history saw its dream of a trip upstate come to end with a 79-75 double-overtime loss to Half Hollow Hills West in the Long Island championship game at Stony Brook University last Sunday. Senior Tavon Sledge scored a LI. title-game record 46 points to lead the Colts.

The Elmont Volunteer Fire Department responded to the report of a fire at a two-story home, located at 10 Cedar St. in Elmont, on Sunday, March 13, around 4:30 p.m. As units arrived at the scene, firefighters observed that the fire was not only in the home on Cedar Street, but also in the adjacent home, at 58 Essex Rd.
