The Merrick American Legion’s ceremony to remember the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks started solemnly on Sunday with an invocation by Rabbi Paul Kirchner, but surprisingly it ended on an upbeat note when Sacred Heart School sixth-grader Alyssa Pallotta, dressed in a pink dress, took to the podium and sang “God Bless America.” Many in the crowd of 200 spontaneously joined hands and joined in singing this most American of songs. more
On most any summer weekend, it’s easy to find sunbathers soaking up rays at Long Island’s many beaches, but whether they have taken the necessary steps to protect their skin isn’t as evident. Some 100 million Americans suffer from skin cancers and diseases, according to the American Skin Association. That’s why Bellmorite Edward Diller, a longtime supporter of the nonprofit organization, has launched the Pan Long Island Challenge to raise awareness about skin disorders as well as money for research. more

The Elmont Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 30, beginning at 10:30 a.m., at the Sewanhaka High School, located at 500 Tulip Ave. in Floral Park. The parade will travel south on Covert Avenue, to Hempstead Turnpike, then turns west on the turnpike, ending at the Elmont Memorial Library, located at 700 Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont. The parade is expected to end around 11:15 a.m. more
