Randi Weingarten, former president of the United Federation of Teachers, now head of the American Federation of Teachers, recently delivered a speech titled, “Towards a True Development and Evaluation System.” She was being proactive by presenting her own plan in response to recent calls for revamping teacher assessment and tenure.

“Everyone respected my father. You couldn’t help it.” Tom Bennet Jr. remembers his father, Tom Bennet Sr., fondly today, along with several residents of the Elmont community, for which Tom was a leader and activist for several years. Tom, who resided on Sun Avenue in Elmont, died in January after suffering from a major heart attack. He was 78 years old.

Five years ago, Franklin Square resident Bill Youngfert decided he wanted to do something positive for the environment — and save a little money, too. After receiving a free solar panel assessment, Youngfert installed solar panels on his home, on Roosevelt Avenue in Franklin Square, and has been witnessing an incredible savings on his electric bill ever since.

On April 19, 1969, members of Cornell University’s Afro-American Society occupied Willard Straight Hall on the Ithaca campus to protest a litany of perceived racial injustices after a cross was burned outside Wari House, a cooperative for African-American female students. During the occupation, AAS members smuggled in rifles and bandoliers of ammunition.

The American Legion of Nassau County held its 73rd Annual National High School Oratorical Contest at the Elmont Memorial Library on Saturday, Feb. 12, where four high school students from Nassau County competed for the honor of competing at the New York State final event, which will be held in Albany in March, where a winner will be chosen to compete at the national competition in April. Approximately 75 New York American Legion members attended the event.
