Elmont residents have long been working to encourage more economic development in the community, and news of the possible development of an Applebee’s restaurant in Elmont was announced last month. On Feb. 22, Applebee’s International’s proposed development was approved by the Town of Hempstead’s Board of Zoning Appeals.

The company applied for a permit for interior alterations and facade at 1710 Hempstead Tpke., where a Sizzler restaurant used to be located. “It’s a great spot for a restaurant,” said Town of Hempstead Councilman Ed Ambrosino.

Susie Trenkle-Pokalsky, press secretary for the Town of Hempstead, said the developer of the site is Jeff Feil, whose office is located on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown.

Ambrosino said he is excited about the Applebee’s development, and is open to an array of development in Elmont, to spur the community’s economy and create jobs. “I am always happy when a new business comes to Elmont. I welcome them, and I will do whatever I can to assist them,” he said.
