Cardinals hold tournament in honor of local students

The Elmont Cardinals Sports Club’s Summer Basketball Tournament kicked off its five-week summer basketball tournament on July 17, at the Elmont Road Park, located at 755 Elmont Rd. in Elmont.

The tournament was held in memory of Naquan Bell, 21, and Bell’s uncle, Brendon McRae, 24, Sewanhaka High School students who were killed in a car accident on Feb. 13. Elmont students who played in the first tournament wore T-shirts displaying the names of Bell and McRae.

The Cardinals will be holding the tournament on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at Elmont Road Park, for the next four weeks. Seventy-five fourth to 10th-grade Elmont students are participating in the program, as well as students from Valley Stream, Freeport, Baldwin, Uniondale and Northport. The tournament consists of six teams in four age groups — 11 and under, 12 and under, 13 and under, and 15 and under.
