Cops: Elmont woman sexually abused student

An Elmont woman who worked as a per diem substitute teacher and teaching assistant at Freeport Public Schools was arrested on March 9 and charged with engaging in criminal sexual activity with a student, according to Nassau County police.

According to police, Kaitlin Grant 23, of Caroline Avenue, had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old female Freeport student that began last November, in Freeport. The student’s family recently became aware of the situation and notified the county Police Department, and Grant was arrested at her home, detectives said.

According to Freeport’s schools superintendent, Dr. Kishore Kuncham, Grant was hired last March to work in a per diem capacity for the district, and had no prior criminal record and passed all background checks. Kuncham added that Grant worked at Freeport High School, with the exception of one day at the J.W. Dodd Middle School, and that she was terminated after she was arrested and charged.

“The district is disturbed by these allegations,” Kuncham said. “We are cooperating fully with the police, and will continue to make the safety and well-being of our students and staff our top priority.”

Grant, who attended Elmont Memorial High School and studied speech-language pathology and audiology at Loyola University in Maryland, was charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual act and three counts of endangering the welfare of child. She was arraigned on March 9 in at First District Court in Hempstead.
