Tania Lawes’ last day on the Elmont Memorial Library’s Board of Trustees was June 23. Lawes served as president of the board for three terms, and as vice president for two terms, and chose not to seek re-election for the board position. Kathy Rau won Lawes’ seat in May, after running uncontested and receiving 943 votes.

During the June 23 Board of Trustees meeting, Lawes said, “I take this opportunity to thank you, the greater Elmont community, for trusting that I was the right person for the job some five years ago. It was an honor to serve you.” She also thanked Maggie Gough, the library’s director, for her diligent work, and for recently bringing the Jackie Robinson exhibit to the library.

“It is my hope, my plea, that this community as a whole moves forward in a positive manner that benefits all of us,” Lawes said in her ending remarks. “As the ‘gateway to Long Island,’ let’s lead a shining example of unity and leadership for our youth and strength for our elderly. The mantle of excellence must be carried on all of our shoulders.” She added that she’s looking forward to spending more time her children, and to serving the community in other ways.

The Elmont Memorial Library’s next public Board of Trustees meeting will be held on July 21, at 8 p.m.
