Raising money for muscular dystrophy

Nearly 70 individuals from local businesses and organizations came together for the third annual “A Day at the Races” event at Belmont Park on July 15, to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Summer Camp program — a one-week program for children who are living with neuromuscular diseases.

The event recognized participating businesses and organizations for raising money to send children to the camp at a cocktail party and awards ceremony, held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and a silent auction was held afterward. Sponsorships for the event ranged from $1,600 to $10,000, and a total of $39,127 was raised to send 48 children to MDA summer camp.

The top five fundraising individuals or teams got to name a race that was held during the day, and take photos in the winner’s circle. In 2009, the MDA raised $50,000 at the event, which helped send more than 60 children to the camp.
