Spartans up win streak to 11

Make it 11 wins in a row for Elmont.

The ultra-balanced, deep and confident Spartans proved too much for visiting Great Neck South in last Friday’s Conference AA-III boys’ basketball showdown, rolling to a 67-50 victory behind 19 points apiece from senior forward Anthony Elechi and senior guard Dillon Williams.

Junior guard Michael Dugue, celebrating his 17th birthday, added a season-high 13 points for Elmont, which improved to 12-2 overall and can seal the conference title and a first-round playoff bye with two more wins. Second-place Great Neck South got 17 points from Ben Kestenbaum.

“It’s never just one guy,” Spartans coach George Holub said. “I have no idea what the scorebook is going to look like after a game. We have a lot of weapons, and if we keep playing strong defense we’ll go far.”

Elmont, the Nassau Class A runner-up to Westbury last season, is considered one of the favorites in Class AA along with defending champion Uniondale, Baldwin and Freeport. After feeling their way through December and the early part of January with a new rotation and set of opponents, the Spartans are starting to hit stride.

“We had a lot of rebuilding to do this season,” said Williams, who opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to make it 49-38. “We’re playing really well right now.”

Elechi, who’s not even Elmont’s tallest player at 6-foot-6—junior center Greg Senat gets the nod at 6-7—showed off his versatility in the opening quarter to help the hosts build a 14-6 lead. Elechi, a lefty, drained an early trey and had two powerful drives to the rim result in easy baskets.
