A statewide group of local news organizations — comprising of more than 100 newspapers across New York — has launched The Empire State Local News Coalition, a joint advocacy effort to advance a legislative package intended to deliver long-term sustainability to the sector.

A winning homecoming for Lawrence schools

The parade began at Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park and wound its way to Lawrence High School as students faculty and alumni celebrated the annual homecoming on Oct. 7, that this year welcomed the class of 1967.

There has been a lot of progress made in the rebuilding efforts since Hurricane Sandy hit Long Island in late October, but there is still work to be done. The Long Island Volunteer Center is in need of volunteers to help those impacted by the storm.

The Five Towns NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program Committee was not one of the eight winners of a bonus $3 million that will be used to implement the post Hurricane Sandy rebuilding projects that have been proposed as winners were announced in Albany Wednesday.

Two men allegedly came into Snipes Shoe Store on Rockaway Turnpike in North Lawrence, took several items of clothing from the shelves and shoved a woman employee, 21, out of their way and left the store on foot at 11:05 a.m. on Sept. 21, according to Nassau police. No injuries were reported.

Reunion celebrates old school and young scholars

Seven Lawrence High School graduates received scholarships totaling $2,000 and scores of former students from the Trade School reunited at the annual reunion held on the grounds of the Five Towns Community Center in Lawrence on July 26, where the trade school was located.

Celebrating Christmas by caroling in Cedarhurst

With the traditional bonfire, chestnuts roasted on an open fire, hot chocolate and flashlights in hand to read the song sheets, holiday revelers gathered in Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park for the village’s annual Christmas celebration and tree lighting.
