On a recent Friday at 2:30 p.m., a Harley Davidson rumbled up Freeport’s famed Nautical Mile, a.k.a. Woodcleft Avenue, followed soon after by a very expensive, very red Italian sports car, revving its engine. Couples strolled up and down the street in search of the perfect bar or restaurant to spend an 85-degree evening. Already the outdoor eateries, with their umbrella-shaded tables, had begun to fill up.

One year before the Village of Lawrence was established in 1897, piping for water was installed. Now about 2,300-feet of six-inch 19th century water main will be replaced by New York American Water with an eight-inch ductile iron main along Causeway Road (from Rock Hall Road to Broadway) and Pearsall Place (from Causeway heading east to the end of the roadway).

A treasure trove of original survey maps of the Long Island Motor Parkway — the country’s first road built exclusively for automobiles, in 1908 — have been in the basement of a Malverne business, the Learning Circle, for decades. “I saw them about 20 years ago and I didn’t pay much attention to them,” said Roy Knoernschild, an on-call custodian for the building.

James L. Thayer, known to family and friends as Jim, was born on Oct. 30, 1944 and grew up on Smith Lane in Hewlett Neck. A former Lawrence village historian, Thayer, died on Feb. 20 in Stuart, Fla. He was 72.
