With the U.S. economy nearing the end of a major shutdown because of the coronavirus pandemic, the nationwide unemployment rate is nearly 15 percent — a historic number that dwarfs the peak of the Great Recession of 2008-09 and draws comparisons to the Great Depression in the 1930s.

Not all local beaches, or beach clubs, will be open Memorial Day weekend. The Village of Atlantic Beach is keeping its eight beaches closed until at least until early June, when they traditionally open, and will not allow the beach clubs that dot its shoreline to open this weekend.

Though the coronavirus pandemic is not over and Long Island and New York City are not hitting all the benchmarks to reopen in comparison to other regions or parts of upstate, Gov. Andrew Cuomo will allow beaches to open next Friday, May 22, in time for the Memorial Day weekend, he said at his daily briefing on May 15.
