SIBSPlace marks the holidays

Celebrating the holidays this past season was made a bit more difficult by Hurricane Sandy, but SIBSPlace, a Hewlett-based program of South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, that serves children ages 5-17 living with a sibling or parent who has cancer or another serious or devastating illness, held a Thanksgiving feast a little more than three weeks after the storm and the hospital had its holiday party in December.

Despite their youth, members of the Hewlett High School sophomore student council remembered the devastation that Hurricane Katrina wrought and seeing the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy in their local community, they wanted to be part of the relief effort.

Temple Israel dedicates Shabbat to Newtown victims

The 26 people killed in the Newtown, Conn. shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School were remembered in a special memorial during Shabbat services at Temple Israel on Dec. 21.
