Stanley and Bebe Barkan of Merrick have traveled the world to publish poets and writers through Cross-Cultural Communications, the small-press publishing house Stanley started in 1971. In June he will co-host an international poetry festival in Swansea, Wales, the birthplace of Dylan Thomas, one of his literary heroes.

Crossing oceans and cultures in pursuit of peace

In 1971, Stanley Barkan’s daughter, Jacqueline Mia, lay in Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. Two of her four kidneys — yes, she had four — had to be removed because they had become nephritic, or inflamed, which could have led to a deadly infection. She was 2 years old. more

The Village of Lawrence is seeking a $25,000 state grant to plant more trees in Zion Park, and would expand the park to include swings and more benches.

Lawrence plans Zion Park expansion on land PPL sought

To improve and expand Zion Park, the Village of Lawrence filed an application in February with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program for a $25,000 tree planting and management grant. The village also formed a three-member committee to offer improvement recommendations. more

When Daniel Cornejo, 21, was in kindergarten at the Number Four School in Lawrence 16 years ago, he fractured his legs and remembered how his kindergarten teacher and now principal, Ann Pedersen, came to his house to home school him because at the time, the school wasn’t handicapped accessible. more
